Teams

With the excellent growth of interest and participation in rugby in the Houston area, we now offer membership to all levels of age group starting with players 5 years old (The 'Mini's) to Under 19 High School age.

Specifically, we have teams at Varsity(U19), Junior Varsity (U17), U15, U13, U11, U9 and Minis (5 to 8).

	Neil Doherty - Head Coach This will be Neil's 5^th season coaching at Katy Rugby, and Fourth season playing Katy Rugby Men's rugby. Neil brings with him 35 years of experience in the game, having been coaching throughout his career by Irish, English, South African adn New Zealander's; he brings an exciting enthusiasm for the game. Neil started his career as a Back for Delisle and Loughborough in Leicester, England, home to the Tigers. Returning to Ireland he played club rugby for Ballina RFC as U17 and U19; also representing at county and provincial level for Mayo and Connacht. After High School level Neil played at Galwegians RFC as a Wing Forward during College. On immigrating to American in 1983, he played rugby at Union RFC New Jersey, Houston Old Boys RFC, Berkshire RFC MA and H.A.R.C RFC all in Forward position roles. As well as coaching the U19 and U17 teams for Katy Rugby Club, Neil is also the Head Coach of Texas High School U20 High Performance Team, Forwards coach of the Texas Collegiate High Performance team, and is the Technical Director for the Houston Stormer's Academy
	Dan O'Donnell - Assistant Coach - U17/U19 This will be Dan’s fifth season coaching with the Katy Youth side and third playing with the Katy men’s team. Dan started the U13 and U15 sides for Katy in the 2006 season. Dan brings with him 22 years of experience in the game. He started playing rugby for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. After three year of college rugby Dan played on and off for two seasons on the Marine Corps Team, Hawaii. For the next 10 years he played on the wing and in the fullback position for RFCs, Parris Island SC, Savanna Georgia Shamrocks RFC, and The Marine Corps Base Camp Jejune Misfits, RFC. In 1998 Dan formed, coached the backs and played with the Second Battalion, Second Marines RFC, playing teams from countries that bordered the Mediterranean Sea during a six month deployment
	Mike Jones - Assistant Coach - Forwards U19/U17 Mike Jones has been associated with Katy Rugby since the club was founded and has been helping coach the U19/U17/U16 forwards for the last few seasons now that his work travel schedule has lightened up. Mike played rugby in school in Wales, played his club rugby as a second row or back row forward for clubs in his native Wales, and in England, Scotland, the Middle East, Alaska & Texas. (2 seasons on the Houston Old Boys with Coach Neil a long time ago!). Mike coached youth rugby in Aberdeen for 2 seasons before moving back to Houston in 2000. Mike's late son Gareth was a founding player & was the U19 captain in the club's second season. His youngest son Ben started with the first U15 squad, and is now a senior on the U19's. Mike looks forward to continuing his involvement with this great program & working with the fantastic bunch of boys on the squad
	Tim O'Gara - Assistant Coach - U19/U17 This will be Tim’s 3rd season coaching at Katy Rugby club and 3rd year playing fullback with the Men’s Team. Tim took up rugby at u-7’s In Presentation College Bray in Ireland and went on to represent the school in their Leinster Senior Cup Campaign in 1990 as a hooker. In ’91 he played hooker for Greystones Rugby Club in their U-19’s McCorry cup campaign as Semi Finalists. He played along side Ireland’s current manager Paul McNaughton in Greystones “Gillfoyle” cup winning team the following season as openside wing forward. After Emigrating to Texas he joined the Houston Old Boys Rugby Club and played with H.A.R.C. after their merger with Houston RFC. Tim is also the Captain of his soccer team Houston Celtic Originals that play in the H.F.A. and was awarded player of the year by his club last season.
	Mark Todd - Assistant Coach - U19/U17/U15 Played rugby for Sam Houston State University for 2 years, Houston Strikers for 1 year, Woodlands Men for 4 years, and Austin Blacks for 2 years. Currently play for West Houston Rugby and have been coaching with Katy Rugby Club for the last 2 years. My favorite position to play is 2nd row - Flanker. "I enjoy coaching youth rugby as it gives me a chance to give back to a sport that I enjoy so much."
	Paul Ayling - U15 Head Coach, U13 Assistant Coach I was born in Germany and raised on the east coast of England. I played rugby at school from age 9 until I was 17. Usually at second row, but sometimes getting my wish which was to play No.8. Having left school, I focussed on cricket playing for St Martins House, Grasshoppers amongst others before finally playing for Tunbridge Wells. While playing cricket for Tunbridge Wells, I got my boys Ollie and Tom playing for the rugby club (who shared the ground with the cricket club) and slowly but surely got dragged back into rugby. I have been coaching now since 1996, starting at minis and now coaching under 15 at Katy. I also now play for Katy Men's team where I play 2nd row, flanker and No8. The reason I play rugby, other than for the sport itself, is the social aspect and the community spirit it offers. I am proud to have been associated with Katy Rugby and with the development of rugby in Texas. 3 years ago, when Ollie, Tom and I first arrived to train with Katy Rugby Club, there were about 10 kids at training, we now have approximately 60-80 kids every week from minis to U15 attending training on Sunday afternoon. Indications are that that trend will continue and rugby will continue to grow in Texas.
	Steve McCrae - U15 Assistant Coach Born in Wellington, New Zealand Played rugby all the way through school and then had a break and then played three years at senior level in Sydney, Australia Travelled abroad to Europe and eventually settled in Denmark where I got married and started a family.Played a couple of seasons of rugby and 12 seasons of Aussie rules football in Denmark before moving to Houston last year. Today I play rugby for West Houston rugby club and help train the u13 and u15 here in Katy. My main aim is to try and get as many boys interested in playing rugby in Texas as possible. My favourite position is flanker and my favourite team, The Allblacks (no surprises there) followed by Fiji because of their hard,attacking open style game.
	Kevan McGregor - U15 Assistant Coach
	Andy Hill - U13 Head Coach Andy Hill: has been a coach with Katy RFC since 2007 at the U14 level and below. Before this he was based in Baku, Azerbaijan, working with BP, where he was also coach for the TISA Titans RFC U12 Team for two years. Originally from the UK, he played rugby at school to U18 level and some recreational rugby at university in the UK and later in Norway. He has a daughter (U18) and son (U15) currently playing with Katy RFC.
	Jonathan Smith - U13, U15 Assistant Coach Started playing rugby aged 11 at school. Played in England, Scotland and Australia over a 28 yeat period. Completed a level 1 coaching qualification from the RFU and coached adults and children in England, Canada and Libya. Have been coaching on and off for 20 years.
	Ian Rolph - U11 Head Coach Played Rugby For St Johns School leatherhead 1980-1985 Followed by Sheffield University Old Johnians and Richmond before Injury circa 1995 Assisted coaching for U9 age group at British School of Brussels 2007/8
	Nick Parker - U11 Assistant Coach Played school rugby in Newquay Cornwall, mostly as hooker. Coaching with the U9 and U11's for a couple of years at Katy.

RFC : First taste of Rugby 1968- Baylor Medical School RFC 1968- Founded the Rice RFC 1968 – 1971- Rice RFC - Captain and Fly Half 1971-1973- Austin All Blacks - Center Summers of 1972 -1975- Aspen Rugby Club – Center and Wing 1973- San Diego Tour with the Eastern Rockies Rugby Representative Side 1974- England Tour with the Denver Highlanders 1975-1993- Houston RFC - Center and Flanker and the Houston Area Touring Side (HARTS) 1993 until about 2000 – Old Tin Can RFC and Texas XXX’s Touring side .
